Newly elected Fine Gael Councillor Ollie Gannon was criticised by Fianna Fáil Cllr Brendan Mulroy for a “flawed proposal” which Cllr Gannon recommended during last Thursday’s meeting of the Westport Town Council.

At a four and a half hour meeting on Monday evening in which Westport town councillors continued their discussion on a draft town development plan, a debate on the listing of the Record of Protected Structures, in which an inventory of 150 additional structures were recommended by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, led to heated discussions as regards the inclusion of structures in Westport House and the Westport House Wall.

Westport town manager Peter Hynes has said that the issue surrounding traffic in the town — which was discussed during a special meeting of Westport Town Council — is being examined, but as the town “was not designed for the car in mind” it will always mean that it will take some time in order to pass through the town. However if Westport is shortlisted for the Smarter Town Travel scheme and is in receipt of funding Mr Hynes said that cars will eventually be replaced by a larger uptake of people cycling and walking in the town, which will help alleviate traffic problems.
